- Food Festivals – The SLMASA Story
Since its inception, the Sri Lankan Muslims Association of South Australia (SLMASA) has been a vibrant hub of cultural pride, spiritual unity, and philanthropic service. At the heart of our mission is a powerful blend of heritage and humanity, a calling to preserve our Sri Lankan roots while uplifting communities both locally and abroad.
Over the years, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to serving others, especially during times of crisis. And what better way to bring people together than through food?
Our food festivals and charity fundraisers are not just events, they are vibrant expressions of our values, reflecting the generosity, resilience, and warmth that define us. Let’s take you through a timeline of heartfelt moments that have brought our community together.
2018 – ASLA Food Festival
It all began with a sizzling success. SLMASA proudly participated in the ASLA Food Festival held at the Fullarton Park Community Centre. Our beloved ‘Mama’s Kitchen’ biriyani stall made its debut, capturing hearts with its flavour and spirit. The vibrant atmosphere was filled with music, conversation, and the aromas of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. More than just a culinary experience, the event served as a platform for building bridges across cultures and generations. The funds raised that day marked our first step toward a larger mission: community impact through food and unity.
2019 – Sri Lankan Food Festival & Fun Fair
The momentum continued in 2019 with the Sri Lankan Food Festival & Fun Fair. This time, our community came together to serve delicious lunch packs catered by Spice and Spoon Restaurant. It wasn’t just a gastronomic delight, it was a show of solidarity and service. As families enjoyed their meals under sunny skies, the proceeds quietly worked their way toward charity projects that would later provide assistance to those in need. It was proof that even the simplest of meals, when shared in love, can leave a profound legacy.
2021 – Hope for a Breath Project
When the COVID-19 pandemic pushed Sri Lanka’s healthcare system to its limits, SLMASA responded with resolve and compassion. The ‘Hope for a Breath’ project was launched to support the Kandy National Hospital with a Medical Oxygen Generator. Our volunteers rolled up their sleeves, cooking tirelessly and selling biriyani to raise funds. In total, we raised an extraordinary $22,046, including $1,745 from the food stall alone. This was more than charity, it was lifeline. A powerful reminder that even from miles away, a united diaspora can make a life-saving difference.
2022 – Sri Lankan Food Festival for ‘Helping Sri Lanka’
In the wake of Sri Lanka’s devastating economic crisis, SLMASA once again mobilised its resources, time, and talent to help. On May 1, 2022, our Sri Lankan Food Festival turned into a mission of mercy. Through the power of community and cuisine, we raised $2,995 – funds that went directly toward helping vulnerable citizens gain access to critical medication. Each dish served was a gesture of hope, each donation a spark of relief. The festival underscored how food not only nourishes the body but also heals communities in distress.
Looking Ahead
Our story is still unfolding. At every step, it’s the spirit of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the unity of our community that fuels the SLMASA journey. We believe in the power of shared meals to create bonds, and in the power of shared purpose to change lives. Behind every plate of biriyani or parcel of lunch is a tale of love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to a greater good.
To all those who’ve joined hands with us, thank you. Whether you’ve cooked, donated, visited a stall, or simply shared our cause, you’ve helped make a difference. And if you’re new to our journey, we invite you to become a part of our story.
Because when we come together, we don’t just feed people. We build futures, spread joy, and bring healing.
