As Ramadan begins, Muslims cherish gathering for iftar with family and friends. For Muslims living in Adelaide, the SLMASA community truly feels like family away from home, and one of its most beloved traditions is coming together to break fast as one. Each family contributes by preparing a portion of food or drinks, creating a beautiful spread that reflects generosity, unity, and the rich variety of our shared culture.
Continuing this meaningful tradition, the SLMASA Grand Iftar was held on 21 February at the Fullarton Park Community Centre. With nearly 200 attendees, the evening saw a remarkable turnout which is a clear sign of a growing, vibrant, and closely connected community.
For many, this was the most anticipated iftar gathering of the year; for others, it was their very first iftar event or even their first SLMASA community gathering after moving to Australia. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, warmth, and a sense of belonging.
After a long day of fasting, preparations began around 7:30 pm. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the organising team, the hall was beautifully arranged and ready to welcome everyone. At sunset, the fast was broken together, followed by a simple home-style rice and curry dinner that was warmly enjoyed by all.
With hearts and stomachs full, attendees settled in to listen to the evening’s speeches. The president delivered a few updates while he expressed gratitude to everyone present and extended a special welcome to the honoured guest, a respected local imam, Sheik Haitham Kabbara whose Ramadan message was both meaningful and inspiring.
Soon after, the congregation stood together for Isha prayer followed by Taraweeh conducted by Sheik Haitham. Men and women prayed in congregation, creating a deeply spiritual and blessed moment that many described as the highlight of the night.
The Grand Iftar was a beautifully organised event that flowed smoothly from start to finish. Simple yet thoughtfully planned, it reflected the spirit of Ramadan, unity, and faith. Attendees expressed heartfelt appreciation to the SLMASA team for their hard work and dedication in delivering such a memorable evening.
The night served as a powerful reminder that when a community comes together with sincerity and shared purpose, even the simplest gathering can become something truly special.
